Laura Fitch AIA, LEED BD+C (She/Her)

I have enjoyed a multi-faceted career, designing many building types. As an outdoor enthusiast and environmentalist, I have successfully strived to integrate the site into the built environment, and to incorporate sustainable practices that reduce the environmental footprint of each intervention.

I first became aware of my interest in architecture as a teenager, when I watched the construction of an experimental passive/active solar house in my neighborhood. As the 1970s “oil crisis” was in effect, I was acutely aware of the relevance of this innovative project, and jumped on the steep learning curve to become a “green architect” by studying at the School of Environmental Design at the University of Colorado in Boulder. I rounded this education out with architectural studies abroad at Danish International Studies and then Boston Architectural College. I became LEED certified in 2003.

I first learned about cohousing in Denmark and was immediately captured by the social and environmental importance of this housing model. I participated in the planning and development of the first east-coast community, Pioneer Valley Cohousing in Amherst, and have been a resident there since its completion in 1994.

I served on the board of the Cohousing Association of the US for 5 years, speaking and writing regularly on the subject. I have worked on the programming and design of dozens of communities throughout North America, many of which have received recognition for social or environmental sustainability. In 2006, I was given the Boston Architectural College’s “Distinguished Alumni Award”, stating “because of you, Laura, many people have found more neighborly and sustainable ways to live. Through your work, our world is a better place”.

The building industry has a critical role to play in responding to Climate Change. I have become increasingly active in furthering my green building expertise and applying it where I can. I am very appreciative of clients who choose to invest in resilient buildings, communities and green building systems.
