Franciscan Mission Sisters of Assisi Feasibility Study
Fitch Architecture & Community Design obtained nine variances through a hearing process before the Mass Architectural Access Board, and were granted several code-compliance alternatives that considerably reduced the project expense.
The Franciscan Mission (circa 1916 with multiple later additions) is home to six sisters who are faced with maintaining an old dormitory and sanctuary into their later years. Laura Fitch helped them design a new elevator connecting three stories and accessible toilet facilities while addressing existing code and fire alarm compliance issues. This project will allow the sisters to continue to run religious workshops while aging-in-place more comfortably. Phase I (construction of toilets) was completed in 2011.
